The SPARK summer started Monday, July 8, 2024, at Bernalillo High School for grades 9-12. Students are broken up into two teams to build two electric Go Karts. During the build students are learning about the purpose, function, and safety of electric vehicles components and systems. Additionally, students are picking up Portrait of a Graduate competencies for success such as how to be problem solvers and critical thinkers, effective communicators, and self-directed navigators. Dear BPS Community- THE DISTRICT of BPS honored our Elementary, Middle School, and High School teachers of the year. For the 2023-2024 school year, the Elementary Teacher of the Year is Asako Strong, a Kindergarten teacher at W.D. Carroll Elementary. Ms. Strong continues to motivate her students to high levels of achievement because of her high expectations and supportive teaching practice. Our High School Teacher of the Year is Miranda Apodaca. Miranda has taken on many responsibilities at BHS, including English department chair, teacher academy advisor, class sponsor, lesson alignment leader, and Advanced Placement (AP) seminar teacher. The contributions Miranda is making will be pivotal as BHS continues to improve instructional implementation and ensure that all students have equitable access to an outstanding high school experience. Finally, this year’s Middle School Teacher of the Year, and the Teacher of the Year for THE DISTRICT of Bernalillo Public Schools is Lorilei Chavez, a social studies teacher at Santo Domingo Middle School. Lori is an example of a community member who wants to give back to her own community in ways that will change the lifelong outcomes of her students. Lori is a proud graduate of Bernalillo High School. She is from Kewa (Santo Domingo Pueblo). She demonstrates to her students on a daily basis the value of education in changing one’s life trajectory, mentors them on decision making, and influences them to be proud Pueblo people and respect their traditions.. Asako, Miranda, and Lori, you each are representative of the best in THE DISTRICT. Your drive and belief in our students is a key factor in how you are able to help our students achieve at increasingly higher levels. You are each dedicated to the profession of teaching, but more importantly, to the impact that your instruction has on our students. As we continue to transform THE DISTRICT, you are models of the type of educator our students deserve. Because of teachers like you, I am optimistic about the future of THE DISTRICT of Bernalillo Public Schools. Matt
