Due to an unexpected building issue, Bernalillo High School will be dismissing early today. If you dropped off your student, you may pick them up immediately. Buses will pick up students between 8:30 and 9:00 a.m.

Earlier today, after early release of students was completed, SLA and BES were placed in a brief shelter in place as a precautionary measure due to police activity in the area.
The shelter in place was lifted and both schools returned to normal operations quickly. As always, the safety of our students and staff is our top priority.

We are writing with an important update regarding tomorrow’s school schedule following today’s water service interruption.
Tuesday, August 18, will be an asynchronous learning day, and students will complete their schoolwork from home. There will be no in-person instruction tomorrow.
Although we had initially anticipated resuming our regular schedule tomorrow, additional time is needed to fully restore our water system. Water will be delivered to the school tomorrow, after which the system will need to be tested and re-pressurized before normal building operations can resume.
Enough water will be delivered to support school operations for the remainder of the week while arrangements are made to have the well serviced.
We will resume in-person instruction on Wednesday, August 19, at the regularly scheduled time.
Teachers will be emailing families this evening with at-home assignments and instructions for tomorrow’s asynchronous learning day. Please watch for communication from your child’s teacher.
We appreciate your patience, flexibility, and understanding as we work to restore reliable water service to our school.
We look forward to welcoming our students back to campus on Wednesday.

Les escribimos con una actualización importante sobre el horario escolar de mañana, a raíz de la interrupción del servicio de agua de hoy.
El martes 18 de agosto será un día de aprendizaje asincrónico, y los estudiantes completarán sus tareas escolares desde casa. No habrá instrucción presencial mañana.
Aunque inicialmente anticipábamos reanudar nuestro horario regular mañana, se necesita tiempo adicional para restablecer completamente nuestro sistema de agua. Mañana se entregará agua a la escuela, después de lo cual el sistema deberá probarse y volver a presurizarse antes de que puedan reanudarse las operaciones normales del edificio.

With 14 years of bilingual teaching and leadership experience across New Mexico and Colombia, Moreno has served as a Dual Language Teacher at Bernalillo Elementary since 2020 and previously led as Principal-Teacher at Mekaddesh School in Cajicá, Colombia.

As we head into the 2026–2027 school year, I want to share an update on Amira, the AI-powered reading assessment tool our teachers use to support student literacy.
Amira gives our teachers real-time insight into how each student is progressing as a reader, so they can target support and resources to that student's specific needs while still supporting personalized learning for every child in the classroom. National data continues to show it as one of the more promising tools to emerge in literacy instruction in recent years, and as with any tool, we are continuously working to use it more effectively in our classrooms.
We know that AI in education is a topic many of our families have questions and opinions about, and we take that seriously. This year, BPS will establish a group to study the district's use of AI tools — including Amira — and bring recommendations to the school board on next steps. We believe decisions about the tools in our classrooms should be grounded in data and evidence, and in the voices of the families we serve.
That's why, in the coming weeks, we will be hosting meetings for parents and community members to learn more about Amira, ask questions, and share feedback directly with our team. We will follow up soon with specific dates, times, and locations so you can plan to attend.

Al comenzar el año escolar 2026–2027, quiero compartir una actualización sobre Amira, la herramienta de evaluación de lectura basada en inteligencia artificial que utilizan nuestros maestros para apoyar la alfabetización de los estudiantes.
Amira le brinda a nuestros maestros información en tiempo real sobre el progreso de cada estudiante como lector, para que puedan dirigir el apoyo y los recursos a las necesidades específicas de cada estudiante, mientras continúan personalizando el aprendizaje para todos los niños en el salón de clases.
