We are excited to welcome you back to a new school year! We want to share updates from our Indian Education Department. The information below will provide insight into our commitment to help you.
Please know that we are here for you. Students, parents, and families are welcome and encouraged to contact us in support of their education.

Bernalillo Public Schools Background
BPS engages, supports, and advocates on behalf of the Native American students, families, communities of the Pueblos, Tribes, and Nations represented within Bernalillo Public Schools. We do so by honoring and uplifting the diverse, unique values of Native American students and communities and their right to a high quality public education.
Indian Education Department Goal
The Indian Education Department’s goal is to advance the academic achievement, cultural identity, language access, attendance, graduation rates, college and career readiness, and overall well-being of Native American students. We will accomplish this by advocating and providing support for opportunities and programs that will help Native American students through their diverse and unique experiences, futures, and successes.
Our Responsibilities
Tribal Relations and Consultation
Monthly Tribal Education Director Meetings, Tribal Education Status Report, Tribal Needs Assessment, Tribal Leadership Summit, MOA/MOUs, oversight of Native Language programs, informational booths, attendance at various community events.
Serve as the district liaison for Tribal consultation, communication, relationship-building, and collaborative partnerships. Maintaining respect for Tribal Sovereignty and cultural protocols.
Native American Student Success:
Tutoring, Culturally-related experiential learning opportunities, Spartan Indigenous Student Union (SISU) assistance and support, culture-based education opportunities, Student data collection, Student summits.
Collaborate with schools to identify and address barriers impacting student achievement and participation.
Family and Community Engagement
Native American Educator and Parent Advisory Committee, Native American Parent Nights, Community engagement events.
Promote effective communication systems that encourage meaningful participation and feedback from Native American students and families.
Grant Management
Impact Aid: Generates around 4 million dollars for BPS, based on number of students that live on reservation where there is no tax base.
Title VI: Generates around $355,000 for BPS, based on number of Tribally enrolled students
NM PED Indian Education Grants: Allocation for SY25-26 is around $219,000, and the focus is to enhance culturally relevant opportunities for Native students.
Ensure BPS is in alignment, compliance and implementation of all Federal and State Tribal education policies.
Important Native Education Policies
Federal Indian Education Act of 1972: Allowed for Tribes to self-determine the development and direction of educational services and programs for their students.
New Mexico Indian Education Act: Ensured in NM that Native students had equitable access to culturally relevant learning environments, maintenance of Native Languages, education systems partner with Tribes.
Yazzie/Martinez Decision & Remedies: Landmark decision that stated that Native students were being underserved and violated the NM Indian Education Act. HB250: Requires Indian impacted school districts to conduct a needs assessment to determine what supports are needed to assist, and prepare Native students.
Tribal Education Sovereignty: Tribes are now developing and engaging in leveraging their sovereignty to define and redefine what education is and how it should be utilized to sustain their self-determined education systems.
They all seek to develop, implement, and sustain inclusive learning environments that allow students to be their authentic selves, cultivate strong identities, and learn through connected opportunities that foster stewardship of their communities, cultures, histories, lands, languages, norms, values, and traditions.
