2009-2010 STATE OF NEW MEXICO HIGHER EDUCATION DEPARTMENT RECOGNITION PROGRAM SCHOLAR   

This program recognizes outstanding New Mexico high school seniors for scholastic achievement as measured by their academic records and ACT scores.  Honorees will be announced in spring 2010 and each will receive a certificate from the New Mexico Higher Education Department. 

Recognition requirements:

  • Graduate from high school in New Mexico during 2010
  • Earn an ACT Composite score of 26 or higher
  • Have a high school GPA of 3.5 or greater  
  • Take the ACT on one of the following test dates:
    • October 25, 2008  
    •   December 13, 2008  
    •   February 7, 2009  
    •   April 4, 2009  
    •   June 13, 2009  
    •   September 12, 2009  
    •   October 24, 2009    

Students' ACT scores ill automatically be reported to the State of New Mexico Higher Education Department Recognition Scholar Program.  If you do NOT want your scores automatically reported, send your request in writing to ACT Institutional Services (67), P.O. Box 168, Iowa City, IA 52243-0168, by February 9, 2010. 

 

COLLEGE AFFORDABILITY GRANT

The purpose of the College Affordability Grant is to encourage New Mexico students with financial need, who do not qualify for other state grants or scholarships, to attend and complete educational programs at a public New Mexico college or university. 

How much is the award?

 

  • Maximum of $1,000 per semester
  • Renewable if student maintains satisfactory progress
  • May receive scholarship for a total of eight (8) consecutive semesters

What are the eligibility requirements?

 

  • New Mexico residents
  • Undergraduate
  • Attend a public New Mexico college or university
  • Must demonstrate financial need as determined by the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).  
  • May not be receiving any other state grants and scholarships.
  • Enroll at least half-time (6 credit hours)

 How do I apply?

Each applicant is required to submit a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).  Contact the Financial Aid Office at the college or university to inquire about the application process. 

When is the deadline?  Deadlines are set by each institution. 

 

 

Dr. Seuss's "Oh, the Places You'll Go!" College Scholarship

The Dr. Seuss's "Oh, the Places You'll Go!" College Scholarship recognizes a high school senior who understands and values the limitless possibilities that education can offer with a scholarship award.

Award:  First Place = $5,000 - one scholarship awarded

Applicants must be 12th-grade high school students graduating spring 2010, age 21 years or under.

Application Deadline:   Entries must be postmarked by February 15, 2010 and mailed to "Oh, the Places You'll Go!" College Scholarship Program. 

 

  BETTY MONTOYA GIFT OF LIFE SCHOLARSHIP:

  Apply now to be eligible for a $1,000 scholarship or a $500 scholarship being offered by two organizations supporting organ and tissue donation.

  Requirements for eligibility:  

  • New Mexico high school senior planning to attend a two or four-year college, university, vocational, or technical school.
  • 2.0 GPA or better
  • Submit an application and three-page essay about Organ and/or Tissue Donation.

NATIONAL COMMISSION for COOPERATIVE EDUCATION SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM :

As the largest independently sponsored merit co-op scholarship in the United States, the National Commission on behalf of eight (8) NCEE Partner Colleges and Universities will award one hundred seventy (170) merit co-op scholarships of $6,000 each, for renewable value of $4,200,000. 

Application Deadline:  February 15, 2010 (postmarked).  To qualify for this scholarship, students must:

  • Have a cumulative high school GPA of 3.5 or better on a 4.0 scale  
  • Complete all the required admissions applications material and be accepted for the 2010-2011 academic year at one of the National Commission Partner Institutions listed. 

To be eligible for a merit co-op scholarship, a student must apply, be accepted, and attend one of the eight (8) NCEE Partner Colleges and Universities listed below, all of which have strong co-op programs:

KFC COLONEL'S SCHOLARS PROGRAM  

The KFC Colonel's Scholars Program is offering a $20,000 scholarship (up to $5,000 per year for tuition, fees, books, and room and board).  The KFC Colonel's Scholars Program is dedicated to assiting students with financial need who plan to pursue a bachelor's degree at a public institution within their legal state of residence. 

To qualify, a student must be:

  • Graduating from high school this academic year (between 12/1/09 and 8/31/10)
  • Maintaining a minimum high school cumulative GPA of 2.75 or higher
  • Enrolling in a public, in-state college or university (statrt date no later than 9/30/10) - starting either with a 2- or 4-year accredited, public (state-funded) college or university
  • Pursuing a bachelor's degree
  • A U.S. citizen or permanent resident.

Students must complete the online application at www.kfcscholars.org .  This online application will be available from December 1, 2009 through the application deadline of  February 10, 2010 .

Applicants must complete and submit the FAFSA form (available at www.fafsa.ed.gov ).  An estimate of financial need can also be calculated at www.act.org/fane .

 NMSU GENERAL SCHOLARSHIP  - Application Deadline - March 1, 2010

  •   Freshmen-NM Resident

    • Many of these scholarships require:

      • N.M. residency
      • confirmation of graduation from an accredited New Mexico high school or a passing NM GED
      • admission to the Las Cruces campus no later than March 1, 2010
      • full-time enrollment each semester at the Las Cruces campus
      • the student to be seeking a bachelor's degree
      • consecutive enrollment

      Eligibility and renewal criteria vary and some scholarships may require an online NMSU scholarship application.  Review each scholarship for details.

NEW MEXICO LEGISLATIVE LOTTERY SCHOLARSHIP

The Legislative Lottery Scholarship is automatically awarded to qualified students starting the 2nd semester of their freshman year.  No application necessary; no admissions deadline.

Award: Tuition ONLY, varying amounts.  (Stated semester rates at NMSU include both tuition and required fees.)

Eligibility Requirements:

  • enrolled in the first regular semester immediately following graduation from a NM high school or receiving a NM GED
  • NM resident
  • degree seeking
  • Minimum enrollment of 12 new credit hours
  • Completion of 12 new graded credit hours at the end of the first semester
  • 2.5 semester GPA for the first semester
  • N.M. homeschoolers must have a GED to be eligible for award. GED must be dated prior to the first day of classes of the fall semester.

Renewal Requirements:

  • Minimum enrollment of 12 new credit hours each semester
  • Completion of 12 new graded credit hours each semester
  • 2.5 cumulative GPA each semester

Redstone College in Broomfield/Denver, Colorado offers the High School Scholarship Program, which is intended to recognize motivated high school seniors and to encourage their pursuit of advanced career-focused higher education in the field of their choice.  The scholarship award will contribute directly to the tuition for the program selected by the recipient. 

The award in the amount of $1,500 is limited to one senior per high school.  To qualify an applicant:

WELLESLEY COLLEGE SCHOLARSHIPS

Wellesley College in Wellesley, Massachusetts is dedicated to providing students from wide-ranging economic backgrounds and experiences with a liberal arts education that will inspire and enable them to be leaders in today's global society.

Their finanical aid program is designed to help every qualified student attend Wellesley.  More than half the student body receives financial aid.  Wellesley admission is need-blind for U.S. citizens and permanent residents.  That is, they do not consider a student's ability to pay when making admission decisions.  Admission is based upon talent, demonstrated skills, and their belief the a student will succeed at Wellesley.  They want each class to represent all backgrounds and experiences.

The ACLU of New Mexico has just learned that the 2010 Youth Activist Scholarshiphas been canceled and will not be returning in the foreseeable future. Toby Wright Scholarship Fund   - a fund established by the Workers' Compensation Association, in conjunction with insurers, employers, attorneys, labor, medical and rehabilitation groups. The purpose of the Toby Wright Memorial Fund is to provide scholarships for youths of permanently or catastrophically injured or deceased workers to complete their education. Scholarship may cover items such as Tuition, Books, Housing, Meals and Course fees. EDUCATION TRUST BOARD PATHWAYS SCHOLARSHIP

General Information

The ETB Pathways Scholarship is a one-time $1,000 scholarship available to New Mexico's neediest students who have demonstrated academic excellence in high school. The ETB Pathways Scholarship is open to all graduating New Mexico high school seniors attending any public or private college or university in the United States.

Eligibility Requirements

All applicants must meet the following requirements:

  • Be a First Time Freshman
  • Be a New Mexico high school graduate from any public or private high school
  • High School graduating GPA of 3.5 on 4.0 scale
  • Have filed a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and have a $0 Estimated Family Contribution on your Student Aid Report (SAR)

Application Procedure:

Complete the Education Trust Board Pathways Scholarship Application and mail to:

> JUNIORS & SENIORS: 

 

The U.S. Senate Youth Program is accepting applications for the 2009-2010 school year, sponsored by the United States Senate, coordinated by the New Mexico Association of Secondary School Principals, and funded by the William Randolph Hearst Foundation.

 

The top two finalists will participate in a one-week, all-expense paid trip to our Nation's Capitol.  Leadership activities and tours of the national monuments will be scheduled.  Presentations and discussions by our U.S. Senators and other elected officials, Supreme Court Justices, and cabinet members will be included.  Each state finalist will be presented with a $5,000 scholarship to continue his/her post-secondary education; with the event marked by a formal dinner. 

 

In order to apply, juniors and seniors must hold a current elective student office in student government, civic, or educational organization; and be a permanent resident of the United States whose parent(s)/guardian(s) reside in New Mexico. 

 

Completed applications are due Friday, September 18, 2009.
